Like every year, the Women In Concert community organizes a musical event where various women artists and bands come together with their performances. This year, the concert is taking place at King’s College, Bijuli Bazar, Kathmandu, on March 8, 2023 on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

Women in Concert 2023

Women in Concert 2023 is a musical event where various women artists and musicians perform and celebrate Women’s day. The event will be held from 2 PM to 6 PM at King’s College. Entry is free for all.

According to the event’s Facebook page,

“This concert is to encourage the participation of young girls and women in an event that encourages music and culture. We allow no alcohol, drugs or smoking in the premises of this environment.”

The show’s highlight is an all-female backup band—an amalgamation of women musicians that Women in Concert have met and nurtured through the last 8 years.

The event includes five new singers who are singing songs by women artists. Some are also composed by women artists/musicians.

The featuring bands and artists include Jhingu Matina, Zoe and the Nightbirds, Shree Tara, Pramila Rai, Megha and the Beats, and Abhaya and the Steam Engines.

The audition for the show took place on February 16 at Super Club, Thamel. The judges were Abhaya Subba from Abhaya and the Steam Engines and Swapnil Sharma from The Shadows Nepal.

Since the auditions, the event has been widely popular. Many talented women artists auditioned for the show. It’s a really nice initiative by the organizers to give these talented women musicians a platform to showcase their potential and be a part of this wonderful community.

They played a few shows and released only one album, P Jam. After only one year together, the band had to split up.

During a podcast interview with Sushant Pradhan (2022), Sunny Tuladhar said that the main reason for the band’s break up was the members’ conflict of interests. Since they were young at the time, their choices and priorities evolved as they grew up. Atomic Bush wasn’t their first choice of interest at the time.

Jindabaad

The members went their separate ways after Atomic Bush’s split. Most members continued exploring music on their own.

In 2009, Sunny, Rajan, and Abhisekh reunited with two other musicians, Rohit Shakya and Kiran Shahi, to form another band, Jindabaad.

The band also participated in a global contest of bands called “The Global Battle of Bands.” Later, they released their EP called ‘Plastic Heart’ in 2011. Jindabaad became a renowned rock band in the Nepali underground scene.

But sadly, they had to split too. In 2017, Jindabaad reunited and started playing shows again. The group released its second EP in 2021 called Ulto Chalachitra.

The band has been together ever since.

The Formation of Jindabaad

The band was formed to participate in a global contest of bands called “The Global Battle of Bands.” Unfortunately, the band could not win the competition. They finished in the second position. The winner of the competition was the band E.quals, whose members are now part of the band Underside.

The competition helped the band gain more popularity in the local scene. Since the local audience already knew the members, the band could easily adjust to the scene.

Jindabaad first released a rehearsal version of a song called “Shades of You”. The song got very popular among the local audience. Then, in 2010, the band released the music video of the song “Rewind”. The video quickly became a hit, and Rewind became one of their most famous tracks.

The band put together an EP called ‘Plastic Heart’ in 2011. Songs like Shades of you, Rewind, and BFM were the band’s most popular songs from the EP. Jindabaad’s music had western influences, and most of their songs were written in English. The band continued playing shows and was becoming a big part of the Nepali Rock Music scene.

The Split-Up

Unfortunately, the band had to split up after being together only for a few years. After that, Rohit Shakya left for Thailand to pursue his education in music production. Later, keyboardist Abhisekh Bhadra also left for the Netherlands to pursue his degree in music.

Other members of the band continued playing music but in their separate ways. In 2012, the band had collaborated with a musician named Mayo Ortiz-Shimonishi as their Keyboard player while Abhisekh was away.

Reunion

After almost six years, Jindabaad reunited and played its first show in November 2017 at Purple Haze rock bar. The fans were excited about the show. But, unfortunately, the band’s Keyboard player Abhisekh Bhadra could not be a part of the reunion. But soon after the first reunion gig, finally, the band reunited with all its original members at KAF Carnival 2017.

The band has been consistent since then, playing shows and releasing music. They released their new single Hatkela in 2019. The band says that they are working on a new album and will release new music very soon.

ULTO CHALACHITRA (2021)

Jindabaad released their second EP ‘Ulto Chalachitra’ in 2021. It consists of four tracks—Jindabaad Part 1, Hatkela, Again, and Jindabaad Part 2. The EP is packed with amazing music. After almost a decade, Jindabaad is back with a bang. They have put together an EP with new-found inspiration.

Besides Jindabaad, all its members are involved in their separate projects and work. For instance, Guitarist Sunny Tuladhar makes custom guitars. Rohit Shakya is involved in music production and filmmaking with his company Fuzz Factory. Rajan Shrestha has his music project—PhatCowlee. He is also working with Rohit in Fuzzscape. Kiran Shahi teaches music in different schools and is also collaborating with other musicians. Abhisekh works as an Academic Director at Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory. He is also involved in various jazz projects.

Jindabaad is the result of talented musicians and their passion for music. The fans had been waiting a long time for the reunion, and now they cannot wait to hear more awesome stuff from the band.

The Beginning

The year was 1998, and St. Xavier’s school was where it all happened. A bunch of friends who had a common passion for rock music came together to form a group, which we now know as Monkey Temple Band. Back then, there was no fancy gear or high-quality equipment. The group started off with what they had because all they wanted to do was make some good music.

Monkey Temple’s first album came out in the year 2002. It was called Black Bee and the Flower. There were about 11 tracks on the album, including hit numbers like Sangai Bachauna and Acoustic 11 (also know as Socheko). These two tracks were the only Nepali songs on the album. Shortly after the band’s first album release, the members of the band departed off to their own career paths.

Sareen Deoja is the vocalist of the band and he is also one of the founding members. Deoja had been to the United States after the release of Monkey Temple’s first album. He had been there to continue his studies. But, he did not give up his love for music. He continued playing music and singing.

Reformation of Monkey Temple

When he returned back to Nepal after almost a decade, he decided to re-group his old band with new members. So Monkey Temple was re-formed with all new members except Sareen Deoja. The newly-formed group recorded the band’s second album called Shades of Grey in 2012. The band continued playing music and doing shows after that. The band’s music video of their song Anumati was featured in MTV India in 2012, making them the first-ever Nepali band to be featured in MTV India.

Monkey released their third, self-titled, album in 2015. In this album, the band re-recorded the songs, Sangai Bachauna and Acoustic 11, which were a part of their first album. The band wanted to refine the quality of their songs as they did not have a better quality record production during their first album.

After the release of their third album, many members have left and joined the band. Sareen Deoja has been the man that has kept the band going all along. With yet another new band line-up, the band released their fourth album in May 2019 called Ajambari.

The band’s current line-up includes Sareen Deoja on Vocals, Gautam Tandukar on drums, Jenish Maharjan on bass, and Dipesh Shrestha on lead guitar. The band has toured all over Nepal with this lineup. They have been playing shows and releasing music videos on a consistent basis. The band is highly active on social media and they have been putting out videos and posts for the fans.

With lots of changes in members and many other challenges, the band has been able to continue making music and stick around for more than two decades. Sunny Mandhar is the lead guitarist of Albatross—the man behind those powerful guitar riffs. He is also the founder of the band. Manandhar is popularly also known as Suncha Vox.

The Birth of Albatross Nepal

Sunny and Avaya—the bass player of Albatross —decided to start a band in their teenage years. They started a band with just three members. Since they did not have a permanent singer, everyone used to sing. The band used to play cover songs of Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Rage Against the Machine at various pubs in Thamel.

Soon after, Shirish Dali joined them, and Albatross was formed in 1998. Manandhar has been an active member of the band since then. He has released four albums with Albatross.

The first album was Hi: Fly, which was a metal album that was not released commercially. Manandhar and the band released their first commercial album, Jo Jas Sanga Sambhandhit Cha in 2005, which included popular tracks like Timi Bhane and Khaseka Tara. After they had released the album, Sunny left for Canada to continue his studies. Shirish also left for the United States. 

The Reunion

The band reunited years later after they had realized that their songs had become very popular in Nepal. So the band decided to continue making more music. Since then, the band has released two more albums, Atti Bhayo in 2011 and Ma Ra Malai in 2014.

Currently, the band has been actively playing shows and touring around the world. In addition, the band is on the verge of releasing their new album called Raat Ko Raani. As of now, they’ve released two tracks from the album so far—Kaha Janchau and Bachau.

How Sunny Got Into Guitar

Now talking about Sunny, he first started playing music by learning to play his sister’s keyboards when he was a kid. Later he shifted to guitar, which was also his sister’s.

Sunny is a self-taught guitarist. He started by learning chords from a Beatles’ songbook. He first heard the song One by Metallica and was attracted to rock/metal music. So, he bought cassettes of Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, and Nirvana and listened to them. He would also try and learn their songs on the guitar.

Inspirations, Collaborations, and More

Sunny is heavily inspired by artists like Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Rage Against the Machine. In addition, his guitar influences come from musicians like Tom Morello, Slash, Jimmy Page, Kurt Cobain, Dimebag Darrell, and Dave Grohl.

Besides Albatross, Sunny has collaborated with many other musicians like Diwas Gurung, Sarad Shrestha, Abhisek S Mishra, Kiran Shahi, and Avishek KC. He was also in a band called Space Cake Break with musicians like Rajib Sayami and Kiran Shahi. The band played a few shows and also released an EP called ‘Space EP’.

Talking about his gear, he plays different guitars in different shows. His most popular guitars are PRS SE Mark Tremonti, Gibson Firebird, and Sahana Guitars (inspired by Ibanez Iceman). He also uses a lot of pedals and effects for his guitar. In his gadget workshop, which he did a few years ago, he said that his favorite pedal is the Wah Pedal.

Manandhar also has a YouTube Channel where he posts cover songs and play-through songs of Albatross. He also makes tutorial videos. However, he is not very active at the moment. He has not posted a video in a long time.

Tours and New Album

Sunny was recently on tour with his band Albatross. They played multiple shows in the USA and Australia. They also played some new songs from their upcoming album Raat Ko Raani. In his interview with Nepali Guitar Tutorial, he said that the band has tried to do something different in this album, which they had not done previously. He also said that the album is inspired by bands like Alice in Chains and Kings of Leon.

The fans eagerly await the new album to hear some of his spectacular guitar riffs and powerful vocals, badass bass, and awesome drums.

Her show in Kathmandu was in Calm, Tangal, and it was a fully-packed show. The fans were super excited to hear her because her songs were so popular, and most of the fans had never heard her sing live.

‘Najeek’ is her most popular track. So it was the main song of the show. She played it at the very end. Because of the request of the fans, she performed the song twice in the same show. She even let the fans sing most of the song. It was a magical moment.

The Story Behind ‘Najeek’

Before playing the song, she shared the story behind it, and here is how it goes:

The year was 2015. Back then, Bartika worked as a waiter in a restaurant in New York. There was a guy who worked in the same restaurant. He was much younger than her.

Since they used to work together, the guy fell in love with her. He just decided that he is in love. But, Bartika, being much older, was not into him. She saw him like a younger brother.

Furthermore, her friends at the time were in their early 20s, just like her. So there was no chance that she would even consider being together with the guy, who was just 19 years old.

But he used to be around her most of the time, complimenting her, saying, “Your eyes are so pretty.” So that’s when she wrote ‘Najeek.’

In the song, she writes how she is trying to tell the guy to let go of the thought of them being together. Further, she writes how emotions and feelings can change quickly. So she tells the guy not to let his feelings decide their future together because she is still in the process of finding herself.
